James, On Words That Tear Down

Text Introduction

Our text this morning is

  • JAMES 1:19-20; 3:1-11; 4:11-12; 5:9-11

One of the features of James is he picks ups and lays downs different ideas.

So to capture what James has to say on works, we have to skip around. For the rest of these lessons on James we will be skipping around.

Also we will cover James’ teaching on words on two lessons because there is so much to say. Today we focus on the negative things.

Here we are

Sermon Text

*JAMES 1:19-20; 3:1-11; 4:11-12; 5:9-11* \\
*19* So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; *20* for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

*JAMES 3:1-11* \\
*1* My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. *2* For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. *3* Indeed, we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. *4* Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. *5* Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.

See how great a forest a little fire kindles! *6* And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. *7* For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. *8* But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. *9* With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. *10* Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. *11* Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? *12* Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

*
#+begin_verse
*JAMES 4:11-12* \\
*11* Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. *12* There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?

*JAMES 5:9-11* \\
*9* Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! *10* My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. *11* Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord---that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.

Sermon Intro: Loose Lips Sink Ships

󰍹 SLIDES - LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS

  • During World War II, the US and UK had similar propaganda campaigns that were designed to keeps citizens from talking too much about the war effort incase there were enemy spies around.
  • Loose Lips Sink Ships was from America, and Careless talk costs lives was from UK
  • Turns out they were probably more about keeping citizens from discussing the war so that the morale wouldn’t suffer
  • Both of those governments knew that if their citizens talked, it could easily swing public sentiement.
  • THE MORE PEOPLE TALK, THE WORSE IT GETS
  • JAMES teaches us we must be SLOW TO SPEAK
  • DO YOU THINK JAMES WOULD BE SURPRISED BY HOW THE WORLD SPEAKS NOW THAT WE ALL HAVE NEVER HAD EASIER ACCESS TO SPEAK TO EVERYONE?
  • I don’t think he would.

󰍹 JAMES ON WORDS: WORDS TEAR DOWN

Series Reminder

We are contining our study of James, we’ve looked at WORKS last time, but today we turn to WORD.

Words are an important part of our lives. Because James has a lot to say about words, we are splitting it up between two lessons. Today is about words tearting down, next time will be own words that build up.
